SUMMARY:General Meeting - Luis E. Zerpa - Petroleum Engineering Opportunities for a Net-Zero Emissions Goal
DESCRIPTION:  \nHost:  Society of Petroleum Engineers\, Denver Section \n  \nEvent:  March 15\, 2023 General Meeting \n  \nTime:  March 15\, 2023 11:30am-1:00pm \n  \nREGISTRATION – Click HERE\n\nSpeaker:  Luis E. Zerpa\, Associate Professor (Colorado School of Mines)\n  \nTitle:  Petroleum Engineering Opportunities for a Net-Zero Emissions Goal  \n  \nPresentation Abstract: \nWe are living critical times for the future of the petroleum industry. Perceived anthropogenic effects on climate\, have promoted the demand from worldwide socio-political and economic forces for the management and mitigation of industrial carbon emissions. The petroleum industry is well posed to have important contributions in this space\, considering the proven technical skills of the Petroleum Engineering disciplines (i.e.\, reservoir engineering\, production\, drilling\, and completions). At Mines\, in collaboration with students and other faculty\, we have developed a diverse research program that is contributing with the petroleum industry transition to net zero emissions. In this presentation\, I give a summary of our exciting research efforts that include projects on geothermal energy\, gas hydrates in flow assurance and in nature\, unconventional low permeability oil/gas reservoirs\, and more recently on geological carbon sequestration. \n  \nSpeaker Biography: \nLuis Zerpa is an Associate Professor at the Petroleum Engineering Department of the Colorado School of Mines\, and Director of the Center for Rock and Fluid Multiphysics. Luis received his degrees in Mechanical Engineering (BS and MS) from the University of Zulia (Venezuela) and PhD in Petroleum Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. Luis previous experience working in industry includes the design of an industrial offshore chemical flooding pilot project for enhanced oil recovery. His research combines experimental and modeling evaluation of multiphysical properties of rocks\, fluids\, and their interactions with applications to petroleum reservoir engineering\, flow assurance\, geothermal\, and CCUS. \n  \nREGISTRATION – Click HERE\n  \n\n  \n
