SUMMARY:SPE Denver General Meeting: December 2025
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nOrganic Oil Recovery is a tertiary oil recovery process that only stimulates certain resident\nmicrobes that already exist in your reservoir to release residual\, bypassed and trapped oil —\nwithout chemicals\, downhole modifications\, topside changes\, or capex. By feeding the microbes\na specific targeted nutrient blend\, we activate a gene in the target microbial species to move\nthem from the water phase (hydrophilic) to the oil/water interface (hydrophobic) where they\nreduce interfacial tension and release oil left behind by conventional methods. The process is\nsimple: batch treatments using ISO tanks and temporary pumping equipment. \nBio:\nZach Broussard is Product Line Manager\, Americas\, for Hunting\, where he leads\ncommercialization of Organic Oil Recovery (OOR)\, a technology that utilizes indigenous\nmicrobes to increase oil recovery. Prior to Hunting\, Zach co-founded Gold H2 (now Eclipse\nEnergy) and served as CTO\, advancing microbial pathways for in-situ hydrogen generation.\nBefore that\, he held roles at ChampionX focused on mitigating microbiologically influenced\ncorrosion in upstream oilfield applications\, bridging lab development with field\nimplementation. He has overseen multi-disciplinary teams across R&D\, pilot design\, and\nreservoir diagnostics\, integrating DNA sequencing\, microbial ecology\, and production analytics\nwith operator workflows. \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:SPE Denver General Meeting: January 2026
DESCRIPTION:Event description\n  \n\nAbstract: \n  \nThe fracturing fluids not only plays a pivotal role in near-wellbore stimulation\, influencing\nproppant transport\, and cluster efficiency\, but is critical to minimizing formation damage and\nmaximizing oil recovery. While friction reduction has traditionally guided fluid selection\, this\nstudy shifts the focus toward subsurface performance metrics that directly impact hydrocarbon\nrecovery. Ovintiv tested over fifteen friction reducer (FR) products in both fresh and produced\nwater using a comprehensive methodology\, including flow loop\, regain conductivity\,\nspontaneous imbibition\, and emulsion tests\, with actual core samples with the main focus on\nrecovery and fluid compatibility.\nThe results highlight the importance of selecting fracture fluids based on their overall impact on\nformation integrity and hydrocarbon mobilization for EOR\, rather than solely on their surface\nperformance. The findings also underscore that not all HVFR products build viscosity effectively\,\nand that fluid viscosity significantly affects cluster formation and proppant distribution. A shift\nin fracture fluid selection criteria is necessary to optimize long-term well productivity by\nbalancing friction reduction with cluster efficiency\, proppant transport\, formation compatibility\nand oil recovery efficiency. \n  \n  \nBio: \n  \nManuel Diaz is a Senior Completions Engineer with over 25 years of experience in the oil and\ngas industry\, including the last 11 years at Ovintiv. Specializing in hydraulic fracturing and well\ncompletions\, Manuel has led innovative projects across the TMS\, Permian\, and the Anadarko\nbasins\, consistently delivering operational excellence and capital efficiency. He is recognized for\nhis rigorous approach to frac design\, advancing cluster efficiency\, driven innovations in frac fluid\nselection\, and implementing cutting-edge diagnostics and technologies to enhance well \nperformance and recovery. Manuel’s leadership in multi-well pad operations\, frac monitoring\,\nand collaborative knowledge sharing has set new benchmarks in safety\, cycle time\, and cost\nreduction. His technical expertise and commitment to continuous improvement have made him\na trusted advisor on cross-disciplinary projects to enhance well productivity and capital\nefficiency. \n\n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:SPE Denver General Meeting: March 2026
DESCRIPTION:Title: Formation-Informed Performance: Closing the Loop Between Geology\, Drilling\, and Completions. \nAuthor: Erin Britton\, Drilling Solutions Engineering Team Lead\, CORVA \nSession Overview: \nAs unconventional development programs mature\, optimizing well performance requires tighter integration between geoscience\, drilling\, and completions teams. Yet zone placement decisions often overlook formation-level variability that directly impacts ROP\, MSE\, vibration\, and overall drilling efficiency. Bridging this gap demands a unified view of subsurface context and real-time performance data. \nThis presentation introduces a unified geosteering\, drilling\, and completions solution designed to provide a single source of truth across disciplines. Geo Insights enables teams to identify the optimal “sweet spot” within the drilling window by pairing stratigraphic context with real-time KPIs such as ROP\, MSE\, vibration\, and effective in-zone footage. Teams can remove structural bias\, reveal true drilling equivalency\, and benchmark performance with confidence. Synchronized views create a collaborative workspace that standardizes best practices and improves cross-functional decision making. \nA Canadian operator case study will highlight how integrating geoscience insights directly into drilling workflows accelerated curve-to-lateral execution by approximately 2.75 days versus offsets\, delivered ~$300\,000 in savings per well\, stabilized ROP\, reduced MSE\, and improved zone placement consistency. By closing the loop with completions data to identify stratigraphic intervals linked to troublesome stages and NPT\, Geo Insights enables faster lessons learned and improved reliability across the development program. Attendees will gain practical insight into how integrated geoscience and analytics can drive measurable performance gains and cost savings in modern drilling operations. \nBio: \nErin Britton is the Drilling Solutions Engineering Team Lead and Geoscience SME at Corva\, she is based in Denver\, Colorado. With a 16-year career spanning drilling engineering\, asset management\, operations leadership\, and consulting\, Erin has focused on integrating formation understanding with real-time performance data to reduce NPT\, improve zone placement\, and standardize best practices across development programs. Prior to Corva\, Erin held engineering and leadership roles at Anschutz Exploration Corporation\, Sundance Energy\, Liberty Resources\, Unit\, and Ovintiv (Encana)- including Director of Engineering & Operations and Senior Staff Drilling Engineer positions supporting large-scale development and optimization initiatives. Erin earned a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma and a Master’s in Business & Energy from the University of Tulsa. \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:SPE Technical Happy Hour: March 2026
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\nSponsor: Liberty Energy \nStudy Group Category: Drilling \nSpeaker: Marc Willerth\, Technology Development Manager\, Helmerich & Payne \nTitle: Getting the Most From Your Last Mile \nAbstract: \n  \nIn recent years\, the pace and complexity of North American drilling has been rapidly\naccelerating. Four-mile step-outs and 180-degree U-turns are quickly becoming the “new\nnormal”\, along with the expectation of delivering drilling speeds of 7000ft/day or more. Lurking\nin the background is the influence of the strongest magnetic storms in over 2 decades\ndisturbing the survey tools that are used to steer these wells.\nThis presentation looks at some of the growing challenges with wellbore placement for novel\nwell designs such as how lateral spacing uncertainty grows when typical drilling and surveying\npractices are applied to extremely long laterals or horseshoe wells\, and how pace of drilling can\nexacerbate the potential impact of magnetic storms. The relative value of enhanced positional\naccuracy is considered\, estimating the increasing lost potential production from each lateral\nmile due to the uncertainty in wellbore placement. It will also discuss how spacing uncertainty\ntrends differ when drilling U-turn wells compared to traditional in-fill drilling campaigns\, along\nwith a discussion of how to properly manage anti-collision for U-turn wells. \nBio: \n  \nMarc is a Technology Development Manager at Helmerich & Payne\, overseeing a research team\nworking on wellbore positioning\, drilling simulation\, condition-based maintenance\, and\nintegrated drilling-geology solutions. He joined H&P in 2017 as part of the MagVAR acquisition\nand prior to that has worked for Scientific Drilling and SLB. He has co-authored over 25\npublications in OnePetro and several patents primarily in the drilling\, geology\, and wellbore\nplacement spaces. Marc is an active member of SPE\, currently serving on the JPT editorial \nreview board as well as being the Error Model chair for the SPE Wellbore Positioning Technical\nSection (also known as the ISCWSA). SUMMARY:SPE Denver General Meeting April 2026
DESCRIPTION:A View of the Private US Oil and Gas Market and Potential Implications for L48 Exploration\n1. The private US oil and gas market is currently adequately capitalized but opportunity poor\n1. 25+ funded private equity-backed teams focused on capturing scaled US onshore asset\n2. Target asset profile: meaningful PDP/cashflow + remaining development drilling (inside of well control)\n3. US onshore asset divestiture market opportunity set currently insufficient to satisfy private capital demand\n2. What are the implications?\n1. Many funded teams will not be successful in capturing asset in time allowed\n2. To capture assets\, teams and private capital providers must either accept lower return (i.e. stretch on underwriting) and/or take more risk\n3. Private capital providers can take more risk in the following ways\ni.      Financial risk – take on more acquisition leverage. Capital providers already doing this.\nii.      Location/regime risk – target PDP + development assets in non-US L48 locations/regimes (e.g. Alaska\, Canada\, Argentina\, GOA). Capital providers evaluating this.\niii.      Geologic risk – step outside of well control to find more oil / take “exploration” risk . Capital providers evaluating this.\n3. Conclusion\n1. At this point it is not yet clear to what extent (or when) private capital will pivot to take exploration risk in L48\n2. A changing commodity price regime could provide the catalyst to take more risk and find more oil\n3. Long term $60 WTI strip (as of mid-October) may be insufficient to cause oil supply growth to meet demand if believe US unconventional represents the marginal bbl \nMatt Loreman BIO \nMatt has 20 years of experience in energy industry. Matt is currently President of Development Capital Resources (DCR)\, a firm with over $500 million in oil and gas investments. SUMMARY:SPE Technical Happy Hour: April 2026
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\nHost: Society of Petroleum Engineers\, Denver Section \nEvent: April 2026 Technical Happy Hour \nTime: April 23\, 4-6pm (HH begins at 4\, Talk at 430\, more Social until 6) \nLocation: Liberty Energy\, 950 17th St\, Suite 2400\, Denver\, CO 80202 \nSponsor: Novi Labs \nStudy Group Category: Data Analytics \nSpeaker: Brett Sinclair\, Research Director\, Novi Labs \nTitle: Meeting the Moment: Using Machine Learning to Assess How the Marcellus and Haynesville will\nSupply Rising Gas Demand \n  \nAbstract:\nOne of the key challenges we face when trying to analyze scenarios that rely on forecasting the\nproduction from future wells\, is how granular we get in forecasting those wells. Traditionally\,\noperators or analysts looking at very specific asset packages will have highly fine-tuned Type\nCurve Areas to hand-select analogous wells\, creating type curves by bench\, by area\, by\nparent/child designation\, and many more cuts of the data. When doing higher-level analysis –\nhow much will a basin produce over time – analysts might use high-level averages of production\nper well or per rig (or frac crew) across an entire region or basin. \nAt Novi\, we train machine learning models across dozens of features that include subsurface\ngeotechnical attributes\, wellbore and completion design\, well spacing\, and how much prior\ndepletion a future well would experience based on its drainage radius and the amount of\nresource extracted thus far. \nThis provides individual well-level production forecasts custom to each potential location that\ncan be used for extremely focused analysis or high-level macro analysis and everything in\nbetween. It also gets rid of the machine learning “black box” and explains the variation from\naverage in a well’s predicted performance due to different geological\, spacing\, completion\, or\ndepletion features. \nIn this presentation\, we will utilize Novi’s proprietary machine learning-derived inventory\nforecasts to analyze how the Marcellus and the Haynesville are each positioned to supply the\nincreased natural gas demand coming from power generation (largely from data centers) and\nLNG export terminals. How much inventory is left\, and what is the quality of that inventory? \nWhich companies are best positioned\, not only in the near term but for the foreseeable future?\nHow have activity levels responded to structural shifts in demand? \nWe will attempt to show that we don’t have to sacrifice well-level forecast accuracy for scale\,\nand that a machine learning approach also improves individual forecast accuracy while at the\nsame time saving time\, providing the analyst more scope to analyze the forecast’s impact\ninstead of in its derivation. \n  \n  \nBio:\nBrett Sinclair is a Research Director at Novi Labs\, where he focuses on applying the outputs of\nNovi’s data and machine learning analytics platform to US upstream oil and gas research. \nPrior to Novi\, Brett spent 10 years at Kimmeridge Energy in the Investment and Operations\nteams. At Kimmeridge\, Brett and his team conducted analysis and research from technical\,\noperational\, and investment perspectives\, to understand the energy landscape\, to develop and\nexplore investment theses\, to underwrite deals\, and to directly manage portfolio assets. \nPrior to Kimmeridge\, Brett worked as a Directional Driller for Baker Hughes\, drilling horizontals\nin the US Lower 48\, the Alaskan North Slope\, and Saudi Arabia. \nBrett has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and an MBA\, both from the University\nof Oklahoma. \n  \n  \nSpeaker Photo: \n \n\n  \n  \nRegister Here

What began as individual well diagnostics has grown into an aggregate dataset that \nreveals how the industry executes completions at scale — and what gets missed when wells are \nanalyzed in isolation. \nThis presentation shares findings at two levels. At the well level\, six operational KPIs — cluster \nand plug depth control\, phase orientation accuracy\, perforated collar rates\, plug performance\, \nand shot size variability — show how significantly performance varies from crew to crew and \noperator to operator\, and where the gap between design intent and downhole reality is costing \nthe most. At the pad level\, integrating intra- and post-frac data across multi-well programs \nexposes inter-well interactions and formation-driven variability that never appear in single-well \nreports. A six-well case study from Reagan County\, Texas brings both threads together. \n  \n  \nBio: \nAdam McQueen grew up in the oil industry\, spending his childhood mostly in Houston and \nScotland. With a chemical engineering degree from Georgia Tech\, he spent nearly 15 years in \nthe pressure pumping world\, working nearly every unconventional basin in the lower 48. After \nspending over three years as an engineer for DynaEnergetics and Advanced Upstream\, he \njoined DarkVision in early 2024. \nAdam brings his unique fracturing\, perforating\, and completion sleeve expertise to the world’s \nmost advanced downhole imaging and measurement technology. He works directly with \noperators to turn high-resolution downhole data into actionable completion and well integrity \ndecisions. He is based in Denver\, Colorado with his wife and two kids. In his free time\, he loves \nto travel and his been to over 55 countries \n\n  \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:SPE Denver General Meeting: September 2026
DESCRIPTION:Title: “From Heel to Toe: Engineering Uniform EGS Injection” \n  \nAbstract: \n  \nEGS circulates cooler water through hydraulically connected horizontal wells\, creating a subsurface heat exchanger. Ideally\, the injection is evenly distributed across the fracture network to promote uniform thermal drawdown; however\, fracture variability and wellbore friction can concentrate flow in high-conductivity pathways or heel-biased stages\, reducing sweep efficiency and accelerating thermal breakthrough. Modeling indicates conformance control providing uniform injection can increase 30-year power generation by 50%. This presentation summarizes surface qualification testing by GTO Technologies of a second-generation casing sleeve\, pump-down actuation system\, and high-temperature tractor designed to deliver uniform EGS injection independent of fracture conductivity. The system preserves full inner diameter from heel to toe and avoids telescoping ball seats while providing regulated flow through an outflow control device. The larger casing inner diameter also reduces parasitic pumping losses from wellbore friction and supports higher injection rates at lower pressures. \n  \nSpeaker Bio: \n  \nDr. Will Fleckenstein is a registered engineer and co-founder of GTO Technologies; a start-up funded with a $5 million seed round focused on commercializing EGS conformance-control technologies. He served as the PI for a $5.3 million DOE grant through the Utah FORGE project to develop the world’s hottest-temperature tractor and first-generation stimulation and conformance-control tools. Dr. Fleckenstein retired from the Colorado School of Mines on June 30\, 2026\, after 26 years as a non-tenure-track faculty member\, including service as the Petroleum Engineering Department Head from 2012 to 2014. Dr. Fleckenstein has 40 years of industry experience\, including a first job as a roughneck on rigs working in the Salton Sea geothermal field and has drilled\, completed or worked over at least 200 wells in his career. Since 2009\, he has also served as Board Chair of the Credit Union of Colorado\, with170\,000 members and $2.6 billion in assets. \n  \nSponsored by: Drift Consulting Solutions \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:SPE Denver General Meeting: October 2026
DESCRIPTION:John Schopp\, What Petroleum Engineers Should Know About Climate Science \nAbstract: \nPetroleum Engineers should have a basic grasp of climate science. While alarmists in the media have caused many of us to tune-out\, the science can be quite interesting. This 30- minute presentation reviews the basic physics\, some learnings from paleo reconstruction\, recent temperature trends\, and then teaches how engineers can make their own future warming calculations. You may be surprised how similar are projections between the scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and other well-known scientists branded as skeptics. Often missing from the climate narrative is perspective on climate shift versus natural weather variability\, for both temperature and storms. This presentation tries to frame this distinction for you so you can make up your own mind on urgency. The climate narrative will always be ubiquitous for the oil and gas business\, so hopefully by having a grasp on the science we engineers can better influence the narrative\, and quantitatively understand how our actions can be helpful. \n  \n  \nBiography: \nJohn Schopp\, SPE\, was Vice President at Encana for 15 years\, and then Senior Advisor to private equity company Blackstone Group for 5 years before retiring in 2021. He is a lifetime weather enthusiast\, and upon retirement found the time to read the 2400 page Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report as well as a number of books and technical articles on climate science. John penned the JPT article “Engineer Raises Climate Science Above the Din” in 2023 and recently taught an SPE Masterclass titled “Climate Science for Engineers”. \n  \nRegister Here

By combining physics-based hydraulic fracturing\, geomechanics\, and reservoir simulation across the Bakken and Permian Basin\, we show that refrac outcomes are highly predictable—achieving blind-test forecasts that matched actual one-year production uplifts with an average mismatch of just 3.7%. \nModel sensitivity analysis shows that short-term refrac gains are driven by pre-refrac recovery factors and well age\, while long-term EUR uplift is governed by infill well distance\, overall well spacing\, and original cluster spacing. Poroelastic stress changes from depletion influence refrac performance\, as uneven stress profiles cause fluid to simply reactivate old fractures instead of creating fresh rock surface. \nEconomic optimization shows that the “right” refrac design is a function of depletion and fracture height containment. The easy refrac candidates are older wells with wide original cluster spacing\, large unstimulated lateral gaps\, low recovery factors\, and wide well spacing—we show that there is opportunity in less obvious candidates when evaluated carefully! \nAbout the Speaker\nGarrett Fowler is Chief Operating Officer at ResFrac\, where he leads global business strategy\, commercial operations\, and professional services across shale\, geothermal\, and CCUS projects. An engineer himself\, Garrett has performed and directed studies in every major shale basin worldwide. Prior to ResFrac\, he held reservoir engineering roles at Oxy and Tachyus\, focusing on EOR and waterflooding. \nGarrett graduated with distinction from Stanford University with a BS in Energy Resources Engineering and an MS in Petroleum Engineering. He has authored and co-authored more than 30 technical papers\, earned the 2022 SPE Regional Completions Optimization and Technology Award\, and is an Eagle Scout\, search and rescue diver\, and multi-time Ironman finisher.

SUMMARY:SPE Nov 26 - Technical Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Host: Society of Petroleum Engineers\, Denver Section \nEvent: November 2026 Technical Happy Hour \nTime: November 5th\, 4-6pm (HH begins at 4\, Talk at 430\, more Social until 6) \nLocation: Liberty Energy\, 950 17th St\, Suite 2400\, Denver\, CO 80202 \nSponsor: Liberty Energy \nStudy Group Category: Drilling \nSpeaker: Lee Hyson\, Business Development Manager\, Gaia Earth Group \nTitle: Modern Open Hole Wireline Operations: Safer\, More Efficient Outcomes with Proactive\, \nHolistic Planning \nAbstract: \nOpen hole wireline logging continues to be the preferred\, cost-effective method of formation \nevaluation in our industry. But as wellbore geometry\, trajectory\, and logging objectives become \nmore complex\, the longer and heavier logging tool strings introduce greater deployment risks\, \noperational uncertainty\, and costs. \nTraditional wireline logging job planning based on tension simulations is no longer sufficient \nbecause other hazards can be left undetected with potentially costly consequences. \nThis lecture presents a modern-holistic methodology\, already widely adopted\, that integrates \nwellbore geometry\, trajectory\, formation properties\, operational requirements\, and insights \nfrom databases of historical wireline jobs that include well designs and operational outcomes. \nAttendees will gain understanding of a data-driven framework for evaluating deployment risks\, \nincluding quantifying differential and mechanical sticking\, along with practical guidance for \nsafer and more reliable wireline operations. \nBio: \nLee holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve \nUniversity and has completed the Stanford Graduate School of Business LEAD \nprogram. He began his career as a wireline engineer and has spent more than two \ndecades supporting operations globally\, including the Rocky Mountains\, Southeast \nAsia\, the Marcellus\, the Gulf of America\, Mexico\, the Caribbean and the North Sea. \nSince joining Gaia in 2011\, his work has focused on strengthening wireline job design \nand execution by developing practical frameworks\, modeling approaches\, and field \nmethods for challenging wells. He has provided wellsite QA/QC support on more than \n175 field operations and has contributed to the creation and refinement of several of the \nplanning and risk-assessment workflows highlighted in this talk. Lee has authored \ntechnical papers and frequently delivers in-house training on applying systematic\, \nmodel-based strategies to improve wireline performance. \n

SUMMARY:SPE Denver General Meeting: November 2026
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \n  \n  \nGas Lift (GL) has been in use for over a century\, but it can still be improved through innovation \nand field testing. This presentation will review more than a decade of GL technology projects \nand resulting learnings. Topics include equipment reliability\, surveillance\, optimization\, \ntroubleshooting\, and production improvement. \nGL may not be resilient enough in certain applications. Hydraulically fractured wells have \ncreated solids-related reliability challenges. More than 20 check valve models were subjected \nto an erosive flow loop. Weaknesses were identified\, and a survivor emerged in the process. \nData is key to GL surveillance\, but not all assets possess the required quality. Wireless \nsensors were deployed at legacy offshore assets to enrich data acquisition and optimize by \nproxy. Ultrasonic gas flow meters were vetted in the lab and field to ensure they could meet \ninjection gas metering needs at locations where testing is rare. \nSometimes the data indicates a GL well is not achieving its potential. CO 2 tracing is a proven \nmethod of identifying where GL gas is being injected without affecting production. A radioactive \ntracing pilot was undertaken to validate an even simpler concept. Even if the GL is on target\, \nlift hydraulics could be enhanced if slip among produced fluids could be reduced. Surfactants \nwere piloted in various GL configurations to determine their effectiveness. \nAs these complementary topics demonstrate\, GL optimization requires an integrated\, \nmultidisciplinary approach. This presentation aims to show that technology advances can be \ndriven by asking and acting on the question\, “Why can’t this be better?” \n  \nBiography: \n  \n  \nMichael C. Romer\, P.E. is Principal Artificial Lift (AL) Engineer at ExxonMobil and is on the \nUpstream Production Optimization team in Houston. He has been with ExxonMobil for more \nthan 19 years\, primarily focusing on global AL. Michael developed ExxonMobil courses on gas \nlift\, ESPs\, rod pumps\, and deliquification and enjoys delivering them worldwide. \nMichael is the API 19G (Gas Lift) Task Group Chair\, ALRDC Board Secretary\, SPE Americas \nAL Conference Vice Chair\, and an SPE ESP Symposium committee member. He holds BS \nand MS degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee and the University \nof Illinois\, respectively. \n  \nRegister Here
