SUMMARY:SPE YP Lunch & Learn: May 2026
DESCRIPTION:Description\n  \n\n1. Title: \nReviewing proppant and its interaction with hydraulic fracturing fluids. \n\n  \n\n2. Objective: \nAn evaluation of the use of locally sourced proppant and the potential for negative impacts with chemistries present in frac fluid. \n\n  \n  \n\n3. Results\, Observations\, Conclusions: \nFluids used in hydraulic fracturing of unconventional resources often contain a complex mixture of chemistries providing a variety of functions including friction reduction\, mineral scale inhibition\, microbial control\, surfactants\, etc. These chemical additives are often chosen after stringent performance and compatibility testing in the laboratory. \nAlternately\, proppant is traditionally selected based on its physical properties and function or more commonly in the current environment simply based on cost and regional availability. Proppant is conventionally viewed only as a material\, but this fails to address its compatibility with the complex mixture of chemical additives present in fracturing fluids. Cost saving measures in proppant extraction and processing\, such as eliminating the final drying step\, can leave behind unforeseen or undesired residual chemicals. This issue highlights the need for more comprehensive testing \nHerein we explore the effects of using locally sourced proppant\, the impact of the wet vs dry proppant on frac chemicals and demonstrate that traditional laboratory testing of water and FR via friction flow loop and rheology does not adequately evaluate the behavior of the product in the presence of these proppants. These negative behaviors may include swelling and/or coagulation of the proppant in the presence of water as well as co-precipitation with other chemicals present in the frac fluid. In field studies this behavior has resulted in increases treating pressure during the frac. Additionally\, we review different techniques used by Select Chemistry to counter the negative impacts to improve or restore performance on the pad. \n\n  \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:SPE YP Lunch and Learn
DESCRIPTION:SPE YP is hosting a lunch and learn on November 7th! Lunch will be sponsored by ChampionX and the venue will be sponsored by Liberty Energy! \nAbstract: \nAutomation has been used for many years now as a means for oil and gas operators to optimize sucker rod pump wells. Traditional automation for rod pump wells involved operating the well at a fixed speed and idling the well based on a preprogramed time (time clocks) or fillage (pump off control). However\, utilizing a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)is a more sophisticated method to allow operators to increase their runtime by detecting when there is less fluid to produce and slowing the unit down\, accordingly. Although utilizing a VFD can provide significant improvements in production and failure reduction\, in some cases operators are not able to realize the full advantage of their rod pump wells with VFDs because the VFD setpoints are not optimized. Optimizing VFD setpoints is not necessarily challenging\, but in many cases requires many iterations of user intervention which takes time\, and with the ever-changing nature of some reservoirs\, that job may never be complete for a given well. However\, utilizing a host software with algorithms developed by industry experts\, VFD setpoint optimization can be done autonomously. Using domain-specific algorithms\, the host software can detect deficiencies in VFD operations and iterate through setpoint changes to determine the optimal setpoints. Utilizing host software\, the algorithms can constantly check to make sure that the setpoints are keeping the well running optimally\, even when reservoir conditions change. By identifying issues like excessive cycling\, lost production\, unnecessary speed changes\, and poor pump fillage\, the algorithms implement changes that improve the performance of the well and help operators leverage the full capabilities of their VFD. \nAbout our Speaker: \nIan has an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. He joined the Theta/ChampionX team (formerly Dover and then Apergy before ChampionX) back in 2016 as an artificial lift engineer. He also was the support team manager and product line manager before starting a new role managing the customer success team. \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:YP Lunch & Learn: Diana Hegazy\, The Impact of Modeling Depositional Environments on Above Ground Considerations for CCS Projects
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nSubsurface modeling for Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) is central to a project’s design\, permitting\, and monitoring. Visualized CO2 plume extents resulting from subsurface simulations are often used in the determination of mineral rights\, landowner interactions\, and pre-existing wellbore integrity considerations. Two key geological features affecting plume size and shape include porosity distributions and permeability anisotropies\, which are influenced by paleo-environmental controls on depositional orientations. Study results show how those environmental controls can preferentially direct injected CO2 along depositionally derived permeability pathways\, creating dominant plume orientations\, and ultimately demonstrating how depositionally controlled plume shapes influence above-ground considerations for CCS projects.

SUMMARY:YP Lunch and Learn - PERFectly Stressed Out: Surface and Downhole Imaging Relations
DESCRIPTION:PERFectly Stressed Out: Surface and Downhole Imaging Relations\nAbstract\nSo many guns and so many charges – how can an operator make quick design change decisions with confidence for gun and charge system performance in the wellbore? Typically\, the industry tests gun and charge performance at the surface\, assuming that the systems will perform similarly downhole. Through multiple studies\, it has been shown that this is not always the case (Horton 2021\, Roberts et al\, 2022). Another consideration is the advertised performance specifications versus measured performance (Cramer et al\, 2023). Many operators design their gun systems to target a prescribed perforation friction based on performance drivers like stage length\, horsepower available on location\, casing specs\, etc. A problem arises when designing in this manner – the industry changes its mind constantly as we learn. When a design change occurs\, it may be prudent to confirm how systems are performing with diagnostic tools like a camera or ultrasonic imaging. These tools are insightful but expensive\, require a wellbore\, and take time.   \n  \n Speaker Bio\nDugan is a Completion Engineer focusing on projects that enhance stimulation and returns at Ovintiv.
