DESCRIPTION:Host:  Society of Petroleum Engineers\, Denver Section \nEvent:  April 2024 Technical Happy Hour​ \nTime:  April 23rd\, 4-6 (HH begins at 4\, Talk at 430\, Social until 6) \nLocation: Ovintiv 40th Floor\, 370 17th St\, Denver\, CO 80202 \nStudy Group Category:  Completion  \nSpeaker: Joseph Mjehovich\, Geophysicist\, IFDATA LLC \nTitle:  Quantitative Analysis of HFTS-2 Completion Designs using Cross-well Strain Measurement \nAbstract: \nLow-frequency Distributed Acoustic Sensing (LF-DAS) based cross-well strain measurement is an advanced monitoring technique used to diagnose completion design efficiency but has been primarily restricted to qualitative analysis. In this study\, we apply our novel Green-function based inversion algorithm to calculate fracture geometry (i.e.\, width) using the Department of Energy sponsored Hydraulic Fracturing Test Site 2 (HFTS-2) dataset. \nWe use the inversion algorithm to calculate dynamic fracture widths using LF-DAS data recorded at two horizontal monitoring wells with permanent optical fiber installations. The inverted fracture widths at the monitoring wells from over 100 hydraulic fracturing stages are used to diagnose the efficiency of eight unique completion designs implemented across three fracturing wells. We develop several metrics to evaluate completion design efficiency including the evenness of fracture widths at the monitoring wells\, fracture density (i.e.\, number of fracture hits per ft)\, and fracture-width-density (i.e.\, fracture width/stage length). \nWe observe a significant impact on completion efficiency with varying degrees of limited entry\, tapered configurations\, and stage length designs. Results indicate improved hydraulic stimulation is achieved with the implementation of limited entry designs for extended stage lengths\, but no observable trend for normal stage lengths. Tapered configurations significantly improve efficiency for extended stage lengths but indicate little impact on normal length designs. Additionally\, our quantitative analysis describes the impact of the nearby depletion zone on completion design efficiency. The methodology developed in this study provides operators with another level of quantitative information to optimize hydraulic fracturing treatments and reduce costs associated with the development of unconventional wells. \nBio: \nJoseph Mjehovich is a Geophysicist at IFDATA LLC\, specializing in the research and development of Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing for reservoir characterization and well design diagnostics. His primary focus lies in advancing the understanding\, analysis\, and interpretation of cross-well based fiber-optic measurements. At IFDATA\, Joseph seamlessly integrates the company’s research and workflows into real-world field projects\, delivering valuable insights and solutions for clients. \nJoseph earned his Master of Science degree in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines\, where he made contributions as a research associate in the Reservoir Characterization Project (RCP) Consortium. His research centered on the quantitative analysis of distributed fiber-optic sensing data to deepen understanding of the key factors driving hydraulic fracture development. Additionally\, Joseph explored the application of distributed acoustic sensing for near-surface seismic surveys aimed at earthquake hazard site classification. \nJoseph has several publications\, including the URTeC 2023 Best of Paper\, and currently has a patent pending with IFDATA LLC. The event is scheduled for the evening of April 17th\, 2024 at the Buffalo Rose in Golden\, Colorado. \nPanelists Bio  \n \nSusan Howes | Subsurface Consultants and Associates \nSusan Howes\, PE\, PHR is President at Subsurface Consultants & Associates\, LLC (SCA) where she is responsible for all facets of the company’s consulting\, recruitment and training services business including maintaining the highest technical quality standards. Howes’ prior experience includes roles of increasing responsibility at Anadarko and Chevron in reservoir engineering\, business development\, corporate engineering\, HR\, organizational capability and reservoir management.  Howes is recognized an industry leader in petro-technical talent attraction\, development and retention. She has coauthored papers and articles on the topics of ethics\, uncertainty management\, risk management\, and talent management. Howes holds a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas. She chairs the Program Committee for SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) 2024 and serves as past-chair of the SPE Management Technical Section.  Howes received the SPE DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal\, is an Honorary Member of SPE\, and served as a SPE Distinguished Lecturer for 2019-20. He serves on the board of numerous nonprofits including PERC\, ACE Colorado\, ACE Montana\, PRI\, and the YCCF. \n  \n \nGreg Phodes | Senior Geologist at Fervo Energy \nAs the Senior Exploration Geologist at Fervo Energy\, Greg Rhodes is helping advance next-generation geothermal by characterizing the largest domestic geothermal lease portfolio and identifying new basins and prospects. Since 2008 he has researched and explored geothermal systems in over 50 countries including fieldwork in Chile\, Turkey\, Ethiopia\, Indonesia\, and Tibet\, among others. Having spent 6 years with one of the largest traditional geothermal developers\, Ormat Technologies\, working on a wide variety of projects with significant focus in the western US\, Greg has abundant experience identifying\, modeling\, and drilling geothermal resources. His career has also included independent geothermal consulting in Kenya for the US Energy Association\, leading collaborative DOE-funded geothermal research at NREL\, and serving as the Geothermal Technical Specialist at CGG. His published research has involved techno-economic modeling of traditional and EGS geothermal drilling and development\, identifying gaps in publicly available geoscience data\, informing federally funded regional geophysical surveys\, repurposing mining data for geothermal\, and experimental geologic and geophysical exploration studies. Greg holds a BS from Vanderbilt University and MS from the Mackay School at University of Nevada\, Reno (Go Wolf Pack!). SUMMARY:YP Lunch & Learn: Diana Hegazy\, The Impact of Modeling Depositional Environments on Above Ground Considerations for CCS Projects
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nSubsurface modeling for Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) is central to a project’s design\, permitting\, and monitoring. Visualized CO2 plume extents resulting from subsurface simulations are often used in the determination of mineral rights\, landowner interactions\, and pre-existing wellbore integrity considerations. Two key geological features affecting plume size and shape include porosity distributions and permeability anisotropies\, which are influenced by paleo-environmental controls on depositional orientations. Study results show how those environmental controls can preferentially direct injected CO2 along depositionally derived permeability pathways\, creating dominant plume orientations\, and ultimately demonstrating how depositionally controlled plume shapes influence above-ground considerations for CCS projects.

DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers \nDistinguished Lecturer 2023-24 Lecture Season \nApplication of Oil and Gas Subsurface Evaluation Methodology to Geothermal: The Value of Data \nTom Bradley \nBaker Hughes Company \nAbstract: \n  \nThe energy landscape is changing: Renewables are gaining in importance as a dependable energy source now that the environmental impact of fossil fuels is understood\, and recent geopolitical events have shown the risks of over-reliance on non-domestic energy sources. \n  \nHeat is a major energy demand. Geothermal energy can be a key contributor as it can supply constant dependable heat for a wide range of uses\, ranging from low temperature heating through mid temperature industrial uses\, to high enthalpies for power generation. It has additional benefits\, that unlike other renewables such as wind and solar\, it has essentially no reliance on varying prevailing conditions. \n  \nHowever\, even with recent industry growth\, and increasing awareness of the importance of subsurface knowledge for geothermal\, many stakeholders are still unaware of it’s value in project success. Therefore\, many projects still disappoint. The knowledge required is very similar to that for successful hydrocarbon exploration. Therefore\, the expertise gained in the hydrocarbon industries over many years can be applied to geothermal projects to help increase their likelihood of success. However\, because of the nature of the two industries\, there is often a barrier that needs to be broken down before this knowledge can be shared. \n  \nIn this presentation\, I discuss the basics of geothermal\, how the subsurface information needed for success is very similar to oil and gas\, show the value of data\, how established oil and gas methodologies can be applied to geothermal\, and how the hydrocarbon industries can contribute to the success of geothermal projects. \n  \nBiography: \n  \nTom Bradley is a Senior Global Petrophysical Advisor with Baker Hughes\, specializing in open hole formation evaluation. After graduating from The Royal School of Mines\, Imperial College\, London with a degree in Geology with Engineering Geology in 1996\, he started his career in 1997 with Western Atlas International. Since then he has worked for Baker Hughes globally in a variety of technical and supervisory roles. Since 2005 he has been based in the Netherlands\, and as part of his current role he is advising multiple stakeholders in the development of geothermal energy in the Netherlands and Europe. \n  \nRegistration: Click HERE

The CFI results are independently delivered and compared with strain data recorded by permanent distributed fiber optic sensor arrays in a vertical data well (the Boxwood 5PH) and two horizontal wells (Boxwood 3H and Boxwood 4H). Boxwood 4H’s permanent fiber provides Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) cluster flow and proppant allocation analytics\, as well as distributed strain sensing (DSS) for cluster level shut-in pressure build-up tests. \nThe objective of this study is to directly compare CFI results with in-well DAS and DSS fiber optic measurements. CFI utilizes microseismic events as active sources for reflection imaging of the conductive portion of hydraulic fractures\, offering high-resolution images of the seismically active zone for precise description of cluster level fluid allocation and conductivity. \nCFI has been benchmarked successfully against established fiber optic diagnostics\, providing insights into conductive fracture geometries\, cluster efficiencies\, and in-well production flow profiling. Key advantages of CFI include imaging fluid and proppant allocation at the cluster level\, offering a four-dimensional view of dynamic transport\, estimating fracture height\, and providing valuable data on hydraulic and conductive fracture geometries. \nThe study reveals strong correlations between CFI and cross-well strain intensity measured by fiber monitors\, as well as good agreement with in-well DAS stimulation fluid allocation. Furthermore\, CFI shows clear correlations with cluster level DSS strain changes during the production phase\, accurately resolving cluster positions along the wellbore. Cluster level reflectivity values from CFI demonstrate a robust agreement with DSS strain change peak values observed on the same clusters. \nBio: \nScott has over 20 years’ direct experience spanning finance\, energy\, mining\, defense\, and civil engineering industries. He graduated from Franklin College (Lugano) Switzerland with BSc in Finance 2002. Scott started his career raising money for both public and private markets as well as mining project in commodities trading. He co-founded Reservoir Imaging Solutions (RIS) in 2019\, a technology-driven subsurface imaging company that was recognized by Darcy Partners as one of the top 10 subsurface oilfield technologies in 2022. Scott also founded Lithos in 2022 and took it public (CBOE:LITS) in Q2 of 2023. Lithos is a technology company focused on delivering sustainable lithium production from brine reservoirs. Scott has prior technical and financial experience in exploration\, development\, and pilot scale production on mines in Canada\, Mexico and the Russian Federation. His experience also includes five years working for an engineering company in the mining and energy space which included resource development and drill programs on mines\, and his skill-set enables him to work hands-on in the field and advising to use modern subsurface imaging techniques. DESCRIPTION:Time:  January 30th\, 4-6 (HH begins at 4\, Talk at 430\, Social until 6) \nLocation: Ovintiv 40th Floor\, 370 17th St\, Denver\, CO 80202 \nStudy Group Category:  Completion  \nSpeaker: Kinleigh Fatheree\, Seismos \nTitle: Utilizing Rapid Rate Drops to Measure Perforation Efficiency During Stimulation  \nAbstract: \nSeismos collaborated with an operator to provide an economical substitute for permanent fiber Uniformity Index. This presentation covers a new method for using rapid rate drops during stimulation to track perforation efficiency. Every time a rapid rate drop occurs during stimulation a small but analyzable oscillatory pressure wave is generated. Acoustic characteristics of this rate drop can be exploited to measure pipe friction\, perforation friction\, as well as tortuosity effects. Three wells were fully analyzed to develop a procedure to quantify the frac fluid distribution during any given stage. Results were compared to permanent cemented fiber to evaluate the accuracy of the approach. This procedure attempts to capture the initial perforation conditions\, and how they change throughout the stage by evaluating each rate drop as they occurred naturally during the treatment. \n  \nBio: \nKinleigh Fatheree is the Strategic Partnerships – Completions Manager for Seismos. She currently works with operators to provide non-invasive\, real-time acoustic monitoring technology for stimulation optimization. She previously was responsible for advanced fracture treatment design and onsite implementation in basins across North America. She also provided direct client support for refracs\, well rescues\, and fracture diagnostic services. DESCRIPTION:  \nTying Stage Architecture to Wolfcamp Performance Through Stacked Diagnostics\nAbstract\nWhile post-frac erosion and Fracture Driven Interactions (FDI) can be good indicators of a successful frac\, getting long-term performance data has mainly been limited to full wellbores of a single design and waiting months for the results. The Permian Asset team was debating the impact of stage architecture on production. Did different designs come on strong\, but then fall off over time? Could a doubling of flow area from the standard design lead to a doubling of performance? An experiment was designed to answer these questions with a toolbox of emerging production diagnostics. By combining these latest techniques with some geologic characterization from in-bit accelerometer data\, performance of a particular design can be examined on a single wellbore\, saving time and money. Three different stage architecture designs were alternated along a Wolfcamp wellbore. These designs were selected to look at the impact of cluster and stage spacing and perforation orientation. A novel methodology for oil tracers (AB testing) was deployed in the test well. Oil tracers that had previously underwent calibration testing for an affinity for each other and the reservoir were pumped during frac. A unique oil tracer was pumped per design. Additionally\, an oil tracer was pumped in stages along a greenfield portion of the lateral and another in brownfield stages next to a parent well.  A carbon fiber rod was run to get an initial look at production allocation by cluster\, stage\, and design type\, allowing a comparison to oil tracers at that snapshot in time.  \n  \nDepletion analysis was calculated by stage along the entirety of the lateral. Depletion values ranged from 0 up to 500 psi. Despite lateral variability\, when averaged by design type\, the depletion values were within the margin of error. The oil tracer is showing that an extended stage length 0 degree phased stage (300’ Top Shots) is the top performer versus an extended stage length 90-270 deg phased design (300’ 90/270) and a design with half the stage length and cluster spacing to double the flow area (150’ Top Shots). Initially\, the greenfield portion of the lateral (3600’ in the toe) was outperforming the next 3600’ of lateral adjacent to a parent well\, but this trend reversed over time. The carbon fiber rod provided a cluster level analysis with the majority of the clusters contributing to the overall production. There is a heel bias associated with the well that is in directional agreement with the greenfield and brownfield tracers at the time of deployment. The rod has the most production attributed to the 150’ Top Shot design\, followed by the 300’ Top Shots\, with the 300’ 90/270 design coming in last. There is a discrepancy between the top design with the oil tracer and fiber rod data. This could be a normalization issue or a water allocation problem. Continued work is needed in this space to find the root cause. Overall\, the stacked diagnostics provided actionable insights on completion designs that can inform future deployments.     \n  \nSpeaker Bio\nJessica is a Senior Completions Engineer for the Ovintiv Chief Completions Team. Her focus is on optimizing job size and perf design through modeling and integrateddiagnostics. Prior to Ovintiv\, she was a Senior Reservoir Engineer focusing on field studies and data analytics in the DJ Basin at Great Western Petroleum. Previously\, she worked for WPX Energy as a Senior Completions Engineer in the Williston Basin\, where Jessica was one of the lead engineers for a completion and spacing optimization program. As a Completion and Production Engineer at Schlumberger\, she worked a variety of technical projects\, including the design\, execution and evaluation of hydraulic fracturing treatments\, rate transient analysis\, production history matching and microseismic monitoring and evaluation.
