This presentation covers a new method for using rapid rate drops during stimulation to track perforation efficiency. Every time a rapid rate drop occurs during stimulation a small but analyzable oscillatory pressure wave is generated. Acoustic characteristics of this rate drop can be exploited to measure pipe friction\, perforation friction\, as well as tortuosity effects. Three wells were fully analyzed to develop a procedure to quantify the frac fluid distribution during any given stage. Results were compared to permanent cemented fiber to evaluate the accuracy of the approach. This procedure attempts to capture the initial perforation conditions\, and how they change throughout the stage by evaluating each rate drop as they occurred naturally during the treatment. \n  \nBio: \nKinleigh Fatheree is the Strategic Partnerships – Completions Manager for Seismos. She currently works with operators to provide non-invasive\, real-time acoustic monitoring technology for stimulation optimization. She previously was responsible for advanced fracture treatment design and onsite implementation in basins across North America. She also provided direct client support for refracs\, well rescues\, and fracture diagnostic services. DESCRIPTION:  \nTying Stage Architecture to Wolfcamp Performance Through Stacked Diagnostics\nAbstract\nWhile post-frac erosion and Fracture Driven Interactions (FDI) can be good indicators of a successful frac\, getting long-term performance data has mainly been limited to full wellbores of a single design and waiting months for the results. The Permian Asset team was debating the impact of stage architecture on production. Did different designs come on strong\, but then fall off over time? Could a doubling of flow area from the standard design lead to a doubling of performance? An experiment was designed to answer these questions with a toolbox of emerging production diagnostics. By combining these latest techniques with some geologic characterization from in-bit accelerometer data\, performance of a particular design can be examined on a single wellbore\, saving time and money. Three different stage architecture designs were alternated along a Wolfcamp wellbore. These designs were selected to look at the impact of cluster and stage spacing and perforation orientation. A novel methodology for oil tracers (AB testing) was deployed in the test well. Oil tracers that had previously underwent calibration testing for an affinity for each other and the reservoir were pumped during frac. A unique oil tracer was pumped per design. Additionally\, an oil tracer was pumped in stages along a greenfield portion of the lateral and another in brownfield stages next to a parent well.  A carbon fiber rod was run to get an initial look at production allocation by cluster\, stage\, and design type\, allowing a comparison to oil tracers at that snapshot in time.  \n  \nDepletion analysis was calculated by stage along the entirety of the lateral. Depletion values ranged from 0 up to 500 psi. Despite lateral variability\, when averaged by design type\, the depletion values were within the margin of error. The oil tracer is showing that an extended stage length 0 degree phased stage (300’ Top Shots) is the top performer versus an extended stage length 90-270 deg phased design (300’ 90/270) and a design with half the stage length and cluster spacing to double the flow area (150’ Top Shots). Initially\, the greenfield portion of the lateral (3600’ in the toe) was outperforming the next 3600’ of lateral adjacent to a parent well\, but this trend reversed over time. The carbon fiber rod provided a cluster level analysis with the majority of the clusters contributing to the overall production. There is a heel bias associated with the well that is in directional agreement with the greenfield and brownfield tracers at the time of deployment. The rod has the most production attributed to the 150’ Top Shot design\, followed by the 300’ Top Shots\, with the 300’ 90/270 design coming in last. There is a discrepancy between the top design with the oil tracer and fiber rod data. This could be a normalization issue or a water allocation problem. Continued work is needed in this space to find the root cause. Overall\, the stacked diagnostics provided actionable insights on completion designs that can inform future deployments.     \n  \nSpeaker Bio\nJessica is a Senior Completions Engineer for the Ovintiv Chief Completions Team. Typically\, the industry tests gun and charge performance at the surface\, assuming that the systems will perform similarly downhole. Through multiple studies\, it has been shown that this is not always the case (Horton 2021\, Roberts et al\, 2022). Another consideration is the advertised performance specifications versus measured performance (Cramer et al\, 2023). Many operators design their gun systems to target a prescribed perforation friction based on performance drivers like stage length\, horsepower available on location\, casing specs\, etc. A problem arises when designing in this manner – the industry changes its mind constantly as we learn. When a design change occurs\, it may be prudent to confirm how systems are performing with diagnostic tools like a camera or ultrasonic imaging. SUMMARY:December GM: Optimizing Stage Lengths by Leveraging Fracture Interference
DESCRIPTION:Optimizing Stage Lengths by Leveraging Fracture Interference: \n  \nObjectives/Scope: This paper covers a case study in the Denver-Julesburg (DJ) Basin that reveals stage lengths can be dynamically varied when wells are tightly spaced to optimize pad drainage and completion cost in homogeneous rock strata. Alternating stage designs in offset wells can support increased stage lengths up to 6x standard (exceeding 1\,000 ft) and still treat and produce as uniformly as smaller stages\, due to the cooperative effect of the overlapping fracture network created by neighboring infill wells. These findings were corroborated by fiber optic data acquired during frac (cross-well strain) and post-flowback production monitoring and interference testing. We also observed Formations within damage zones altered from faults can affect drainage results. \nMethods\, Procedures\, Process: Differing stage lengths (X\, 2X\, 3X and 6X) were trialed in three wells in a six well section.  Fiber optic diagnostics were acquired during frac for cross-well strain evaluation and 60 days post-flowback for production monitoring and interference testing. Locations and extent of fracture interactions were observed during the fracturing process\, and later compared to the production and interference testing results after flowback. \nResults\, Observations\, Conclusions: The post-completion diagnostics corroborated the during frac cross-well strain data. Interference testing reveals communication as well as unique geological features in the areas identified by the cross-well strain data. There is little if any difference in cross-well strain or production behavior of standard-length X stages offset by X stage lengths and X offset by 2X or 3X stage lengths. Performance of the 3X and 6X stages is nearly identical to the X stage lengths\, in both production and interference from a uniformity and production volume. \nNovel/Additive Information: When wells are known to interfere or communicate\, completion designs can be modified dynamically to work with overlapping stage designs\, optimizing completion costs without sacrificing treatment uniformity nor production. DESCRIPTION:  \nMaking More Informed Business Decisions Through Rate Transient Analysis in Unconventionals \n  \nAbstract: The benefits of Rate Transient Analysis (RTA) for production forecasting and reservoir characterization are generally well understood. However\, the utility for RTA beyond these common practices goes frequently unrecognized. By itself\, RTA can be used to identify costly pitfalls with drilling decisions\, rigorously normalize well and reservoir production attributes\, and diagnose wells with uplift potential. As the cornerstone of an integrated reservoir study\, RTA can further be applied to reduce reservoir description uncertainty\, optimize well landing zone\, and validate petrophysical properties derived from log analysis. In an era that has asset teams migrating from physics-based to data-driven development planning workflows\, it is important to remember the value that well performance analysis and modeling techniques serve. This presentation will feature RTA solving several different objective functions\, illustrated through cases studies. Attendees to this talk will exit with a better understanding of how RTA can be used as a practical tool for well and reservoir evaluations; providing auditable insights with high return-on-investment.  \n  \nBio: John is the President and Co-Founder of SAGA Wisdom; a tech start-up focused on digitally transforming education for energy industry professionals. He has a bachelors degree in mining engineering from Queen’s University and a masters degree in chemical engineering from the University of Calgary.  Over the past 15 years\, he is better known as a reservoir engineer and instructor of Rate Transient Analysis (RTA) specializing in unconventional reservoirs. He has analyzed production data from thousands of wells\, spanning most major tight and ultra-tight plays in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Argentina. He has authored or co-authored 20 SPE papers\, primarily focused on production forecasting\, stimulation effectiveness evaluation\, well spacing and completions optimization and diagnosing untapped well performance potential. DESCRIPTION:Host:  Society of Petroleum Engineers\, Denver Section \nEvent:  October 2023 Technical Happy Hour​ \nTime:  October 12th\, 4-6 (HH begins at 4\, Talk at 430\, Social until 6) \nLocation: Ovintiv 40th Floor\, 370 17th St\, Denver\, CO 80202 \nSponsor: Kairos Energy Services \nStudy Group Category:  Production \nSpeaker: Michael Lantz\, Co-founder and CEO at Kairos Energy Services \nTitle:  Multi-Basin Case Study:  Remediating Damage from Fracture Driven Interactions Utilizing a Rigless Chemical Process and a Bit More \nAbstract: \nThe development of US unconventional wells has reached the point where most new completions risk interactions with existing parent wells.  Fracture driven interactions between child and parent wells result in a wide variation of production impacts but in many cases\, production can be negatively affected and cannot be solely attributed to stolen reserves from the child well.  Numerous damage mechanisms are identified with the two most dominant mechanisms being capillary phase trapping and fracture conductivity damage from FR-iron gels.   \nMultiple surfactant-nanoparticles chemistry was studied to reduce capillary pressure across multiple unconventional basins.  A new chemistry was developed that significantly reduced the required amount of citric acid to remediate FR-iron gel damage.  The chemistry was integrated into a novel rigless process that utilizes a diversion process combined with a specific volumetric design methodology to improve fluid distribution along lateral and into the propped fracture network and fracture-matrix interface.  Case studies across two different basins are described\, yielding 2-10x increases in hydrocarbon production and paybacks in less than 4 months.  \nThis process is being commercially scaled and is being trialed on frac hit wells in other basins.  This technique allows the industry to reassess damage from frac hits and potentially recover reserves that were previously thought unrecoverable.   \nThis process is being applied to wells that are underperforming as a restimulation technique and a case study from the DJ Basin and Anadarko Basin will be reviewed.   \nBio: \nMichael Lantz is the co-founder and CEO of Kairos Energy Services. Lantz has over 15 years of experience in maximizing hydrocarbon recovery from conventional and unconventional reservoirs.
