Abstract

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) – Colorado School of Mines Student Chapter, in partnership with the SPE – Denver Section, proudly hosts the annual Joint Session. This prestigious event offers an exceptional opportunity for students and industry professionals to engage in a dynamic exchange of enjoyment, networking, knowledge, and ideas. This year’s event will host a panel themed “Powering Tomorrow: Unleashing Innovation in the Energy Industry” to be discussed by influential speakers from the oil and gas industry. The event is scheduled for the evening of April 17th, 2024 at the Buffalo Rose in Golden, Colorado.

Panelists Bio 

Susan Howes | Subsurface Consultants and Associates

Susan Howes, PE, PHR is President at Subsurface Consultants & Associates, LLC (SCA) where she is responsible for all facets of the company’s consulting, recruitment and training services business including maintaining the highest technical quality standards. Howes’ prior experience includes roles of increasing responsibility at Anadarko and Chevron in reservoir engineering, business development, corporate engineering, HR, organizational capability and reservoir management.  Howes is recognized an industry leader in petro-technical talent attraction, development and retention. She has coauthored papers and articles on the topics of ethics, uncertainty management, risk management, and talent management. Howes holds a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas. She chairs the Program Committee for SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) 2024 and serves as past-chair of the SPE Management Technical Section.  Howes received the SPE DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal, is an Honorary Member of SPE, and served as a SPE Distinguished Lecturer for 2019-20. She serves on the Colorado School of Mines Petroleum Engineering Department Program Advisory Board, on the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council BOD and chairs the Society of Women Engineers – Houston Area Awards Committee. Howes received the 2020 Woman of Excellence award from the Federation of Houston Professional Women.

 

Chris Wright | CEO Liberty Energy

Self-described tech nerd turned entrepreneur, Chris Wright serves as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Liberty Energy. Chris is a dedicated humanitarian with a passion for bringing the benefits of energy to every community in the world. This passion has inspired a career in energy working not only in oil and gas but fusion, solar, and geothermal. Chris embraces all sources of energy if they are abundant, affordable, and reliable. Chris has become a bold advocate, bringing rational thought to the energy dialogue. He has spoken on energy and the merits of the Shale Revolution to the UK House of Lords, and state and federal lawmakers, with multiple appearances on network TV, documentaries, and podcasts. Recently, Chris’ #ThankYouNorthFace campaign went viral with over 5 million views, forcing a sober discussion on the multiple uses of oil and gas in products. Chris completed an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at MIT and graduate work in Electrical Engineering at both UC Berkeley and MIT. Chris founded Pinnacle Technologies and served as CEO from 1992 to 2006. Pinnacle created the hydraulic fracture mapping industry and its innovations helped launch commercial shale gas production in the late 1990s. Chris was Chairman of Stroud Energy, an early shale gas producer, before its sale to Range Resources in 2006. Additionally, Chris founded and serves as Executive Chairman of Liberty Resources and Liberty Midstream Solutions and also sits on the Board of Directors for Urban Solutions Group, and the Federal Reserve Bank, Denver Branch. Chris grew up and currently lives in Colorado with his wife, Liz. He is a passionate father, skier, cyclist, climber, and outdoor enthusiast. He serves on the board of numerous nonprofits including PERC, ACE Colorado, ACE Montana, PRI, and the YCCF.

 

Greg Phodes | Senior Geologist at Fervo Energy

As the Senior Exploration Geologist at Fervo Energy, Greg Rhodes is helping advance next-generation geothermal by characterizing the largest domestic geothermal lease portfolio and identifying new basins and prospects. Since 2008 he has researched and explored geothermal systems in over 50 countries including fieldwork in Chile, Turkey, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Tibet, among others. Having spent 6 years with one of the largest traditional geothermal developers, Ormat Technologies, working on a wide variety of projects with significant focus in the western US, Greg has abundant experience identifying, modeling, and drilling geothermal resources. His career has also included independent geothermal consulting in Kenya for the US Energy Association, leading collaborative DOE-funded geothermal research at NREL, and serving as the Geothermal Technical Specialist at CGG. His published research has involved techno-economic modeling of traditional and EGS geothermal drilling and development, identifying gaps in publicly available geoscience data, informing federally funded regional geophysical surveys, repurposing mining data for geothermal, and experimental geologic and geophysical exploration studies. Greg holds a BS from Vanderbilt University and MS from the Mackay School at University of Nevada, Reno (Go Wolf Pack!). Greg relocated to Denver in 2023 after living in Wales.

Pricing

Tickets for the joint session are $60 for working professionals and $15 for students.
