This happy hour will be a panel session moderated by Owen McMillian discussing upstream industry and growth with input from our esteemed panel, Austin Akers, Mark Cleveland, Skyler Gary, and Andrew Haney. Focus will be placed on today’s views as well as current and future challenges and opportunities for growth within the sector! Owen McMillian, Land Manager Ovintiv
Austin Akers, CEO Bison Oil and Gas
Prior to co-founding Bison in 2015, Austin co-founded and served as Vice President of Land at LOGOS Resources, LLC.. Mr. Akers began his career as a field landman throughout the Rockies. During his career Austin has founded numerous companies in the oil and gas space including Buffalo Royalties, LLC and Warner-Caldwell Investments, LLC. In addition, Mr. Akers currently sits on the board of Taproot Rockies Midstream, LLC and Children’s Hospital Foundation Colorado. Austin graduated with a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.
Mark Cleveland, Vice President Business Development Civitas Resources
Mark Cleveland is currently the VP of Business Development at Civitas Resources. In 2023, he helped lead CIVI’s entry into the Permian basin through a series of 4 separate transactions. Previously, he led business development and reservoir engineering at RimRock Oil and Gas, worked in JP Morgan’s Natural Resources investment banking group, and in various roles at Talisman Energy. He earned his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the Colorado School of Mines.
Skyler Gary, Founder and Co-CEO Avant Natural Resources

Skyler Gary co-founded Avant in 2019 and serves as Co-Chief Executive Officer. He leads fundraising efforts and company strategy, while overseeing business development, land execution and personnel management. Skyler was previously Director of Land and Business Development for Hat Creek Energy, LLC a Denver-based E&P company with operated and non-operated assets in several states. Skyler earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of San Diego.
ANDREW HANEY | CO-PRESIDENT | NICKEL ROAD OPERATING LLC
Mr. Haney is Co-President and Co-Founder of Nickel Road Operating LLC (“Nickel Road”). He has over 20 years of experience in technical and leadership roles, oil and gas asset management, development engineering and field production optimization. At Nickel Road, Mr. Haney has grown the upstream oil and gas producer to a significant operated position in the DJ Basin with a robust inventory of permitted horizontal drilling locations. Prior to founding Nickel Road, he previously held various roles in companies focused on the development of unconventional oil and gas resources across the Rockies region including Vice President of Development for Ursa Operating Company (2012 – 2017), Senior Reservoir Engineer – Business Development at Pioneer Natural Resources USA (2012) and as Reservoir Engineer and Completions Engineer for Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. (2005 –2012). He began his career with Shell Exploration & Production Company as a Reservoir Engineer (2001 – 2005). Mr. Haney has a passion for strategies that leverage technical innovation to create commercial value.
Mr. Haney received a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering with Honors from Colorado School of Mines and a M.S. in Global Energy Management from the University of Colorado Denver. He is a member of the President’s Council of the Colorado School of Mines Foundation and a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Under his leadership, Nickel Road was recognized by the Denver Business Journal as one of the 2022 Best Places to Work – Small Companies.
